Creation of Ragn Sell`s demo-plant`s engineering design for the oil shale valorising plant has started
Ragn Sell`s oil shale valorising project`s demo-plant, which is planned to be launched in 2024, is getting its engineering design from experienced Finnish engineering company Afry Oy. The design, aiming for the most environmentally sound solutions, will be finalized by the end of 2022.
Jouni Harju, the Project Manager for the plant said, that working with novel technologies is always very inspiring. “With the innovative technologies we can contribute on establishing more circular solutions for industries. In this case, the vision is to use the oil shale ash to generate and recover resources that can be used in other production processes e.g., precipitated calcium carbonite. As independent technology consultants, we help our clients identify and choose the best possible alternatives and deliver a safe, sustainable, and cost-effective result. Our process expertise, supported by globally integrated engineering and project management tools, ensure effective project execution and plant operation, “added Harju.
According to the Ragn Sells Project Manager Alar Saluste, this engineering phase is a vital one before the construction can begin. „We are excited to come closer to seeing tangible results following the long development and research period and are dedicated to hold on to the planned timetable of launching the demo-plant already in 2024. This demo plant will be crucial to support our main goal with valuable experience and data – the large production plant to be launched in 2028, “said Saluste.
AFRY is responsible of engineering design to provide a cost estimate for Ragn-Sells oil shale ash upcycling development project to make the final investment decision to build the demo plant.
During the last 60 years, Estonia has incinerated oil shale rock to produce energy. As a result, more than 600 million tons of oil shale ash have been disposed of in nature, placing an enormous burden on the environment. Ragn-Sells has developed a patented solution transforming ash into useful calcium carbonate using carbon capture technology. The calcium carbonate demo- and industrial plants are planned to the territory of electricity production in City of Narva, Eastern Estonia.
The environmental company Ragn-Sells converts waste into pure raw materials so that they can be used repeatedly. Ragn-Sells drives the transition to a circular economy through solutions that reduce the environmental and climate impact of others, and with a vision of a being living proof that caring for the earth and business go hand in hand. Ragn-Sells is a family owned, privately held corporate group, originating from 1881, in Estonia the company is present from 1992.
AFRY’s Process Industry Division provides services to broad client base consisting assignment in Chemicals, Mining & Metal and Pulp & Paper. AFRY offers added value for any innovation, start-up, or development project. We have strong track record working with start-ups from idea to commercial production with valuable business.
